Artists on the lookout for new materials are prepared to judge a book by its cover, writes Ray Edgar.
FOR anyone who has flinched at a dog-eared page, winced at the crack of a book's spine, or despaired at its ''defacement'' with marginalia and signatures, the thought of applying a scalpel to a book is probably abhorrent.
But in the digital age, as artists and designers question the role of this traditional form, the once-venerated book is simply another material to create with.
